This Week In Doctor Who - December 28, 2005
(posted 28th Dec 2005, 1:05pm - TWIDW post #0368)
THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
December 28, 2005 - Vol 8, No 52
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood
Thursday 29 December:
Style UK 9PM UAE - The Unquiet Dead
Friday 30 December:
Jimmy (Italy) - 9PM - Il Padre Di Rose
Style UK 9PM UAE - Aliens Of London
New Years Day 2006:
BBC Three 7PM GMT - The Christmas Invasion (encore)
BBC Interactive 8PM GMT "Attack Of The Graske" (interactive mini-
episode)
It's the end of 2005. A brand new Doctor has arrived, entranced much
of the world, and departed already. Replaced by another brand new
Doctor who is entrancing audiences again.
The overnight ratings for The Christmas Invasion on BBC One on
Christmas Night were an average of 9.4 million viewers with a peak
of 9.8 million, the best performance since Rose. The final numbers
(including timeshifted viewers) will probably come out an hour or so
*after* next week's column goes out. No ratings for the CBC
broadcast on 26 December had been announced as of this writing.
In the UK, you have another chance to see The Christmas Invasion
if you missed it or your VCR/DVR failed you - BBC Three repeats the
episode on New Years Day at 7PM GMT. Interactive
game/episode "Attack Of The Graske" is also available that night
from 8PM to Midnight to UK digital viewers only who press the red
button. NTL cable viewers cannot access the game, apparently.
The Second Series airs in 2006. The BBC didn't decide on the start
date for Series One till just a few weeks before it began. The same
will probably happen this time. Expect it Saturdays at 7PM GMT on
BBC One, with Doctor Who Confidential airing almost immediately
afterwards on BBC Three.
Doctor Who fans in Israel will soon get Series One through Yes Weekend http://www.yesweekend.co.il . It is expected to premiere the weekend of 20 January. Exact broadcast time and number of airings for each episode is unknown. The only website I have found with listings for Yes Weekend so far is in Hebrew, making searching slightly difficult.
The Maltese Rumor. I've seen comments praising that Doctor Who is
being picked up in Malta. Alas, there was no channel or premiere
date to back it up. If anyone knows of an online Maltese TV Guide,
send me an e-mail.
US readers - the broadcast of The Christmas Invasion seems to be
causing new questions about whether the US audience has missed
Doctor Who. No one has bought the show yet, so you haven't missed
any episodes unless you had access to CBC TV
http://www.cbc.ca/television and didn't tune in. If you have a multi-
region DVD player you can buy Series One from the UK now. If you
don't have a multi-region player/don't know what you have, Series
One is out in the US and Canada on DVD on February 14, and will play
on players sold in the US. Barring a late miracle, this will count
as the US premiere of the Christopher Eccleston Doctor Who episodes.
BBC 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 is *not* airing part 3 of The Chimes
Of Midnight this Saturday night. They have special New Years
programming. Part 2 remains online through the listen again page
until the 31st. Part 3 of The Chimes Of Midnight (starring Paul
McGann and India Fisher) makes its radio premiere on 7 January at
6:30PM and 12:30AM GMT.
UKTV Gold is cutting back the number of new series repeats it airs come January. The last 5 episodes in their weekly repeat run (starring with The Empty Child) will air just once - late Sunday afternoons. This is a change from a .pdf file of an earlier January schedule where episodes aired on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. When this repeat cycle is finished on 5 February, the Christopher Eccleston episodes will be rested and vanish from the schedule for now. The earlier seasons will remain on UKTV Gold, with a couple of leftover episodes repeating before Jon Pertwee stories resume on 19 February. See the classic series section for the full list of repeats.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
